The Lac Rose is probably the better-known attraction of Senegal. Indeed, the Pink Lake Senegal is famous for has such beautiful deep colors that make the trip from Dakar worth it. Though, as we experienced ourselves, the colorful hues appear only under specific weather conditions. If like for us, the weather doesn’t cooperate, well, you might not get to admire under its best conditions. Nevertheless, the visit was really interesting as we got to see the local villagers harvesting the salt from the lake.
Pink Lake Senegal
The Pink Lake, or Lac Rose as it’s called in French, is actually officially Lac Retba. So many names for the same lac! The lake is located about 30 km (one hour drive) north of Dakar, the capital of Senegal, and takes its nickname from the Dunaliella salina algae that grow there and turn pink.
So what weather do you need to see the famous pink colors of Senegal Lac Rose? Two things must happen at the same time: a shining sun that lightens the lake and blowing winds that stir the algae. We had neither wind nor sun when we visited so the lake lacked its famous hues.
Salt Harvesting
Regardless of the lack of pink colors, we got to see the local villagers harvesting the salt from the lake, turning the natural phenomena into a source of income. Indeed, the salt is then sold around the world.
